Primary insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep in the absence of medical, psychiatric or environmental causes. This study investigates the efficacy of Mamsyadi Kwatha compared to Tagaradi Kwatha in patients with primary insomnia.
Method
The study included 50 patients diagnosed as primary insomnia according to DSM IV TR criteria. The patients were divided into two groups:
Group MK (Mamsyadi Kwatha): 24 ml of Mamsyadi Kwatha twice daily for 30 days
Group TK (Tagaradi Kwatha): 24 ml Tagaradi Kwatha twice daily for 30 days
The evaluation was carried out using:
Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)
Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)
Insomnia Severity Index (ISI)
Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS)
Sleep diary over 15 days
Blood parameters: Liver function tests, hemoglobin and serum creatinine were measured at baseline and after 30 days.
Results
1. Primary results:
PSQI (sleep quality): Significant improvements in both groups (p < 0.001).
ESS (daytime sleepiness): Significant reduction in both groups (p < 0.001).
ISI (severity of insomnia): Significant reduction in symptoms in both groups (p < 0.001).
2. Secondary results:
DASS (anxiety, depression, stress): Both groups showed significant improvements in all subscales (p < 0.001).
Sleep diary: The duration of sleep increased significantly in the Mamsyadi Kwatha group (p = 0.003), while the number of awakenings and the duration of falling asleep also improved.
Blood parameters: No significant changes in liver enzymes or serum creatinine. No side effects were reported.
Comparison of the groups:
Both groups showed comparable results in terms of improvement in sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and insomnia severity.
Mamsyadi Kwatha showed a faster effect on total sleep duration compared to Tagaradi Kwatha, especially in the first 15 days of treatment.
