Hormones play a central role in our physical and emotional well-being. They control processes such as metabolism, sleep patterns, reproduction and stress management. If the hormonal balance is out of kilter, this can lead to symptoms such as exhaustion, mood swings, weight gain or skin problems. The traditional Indian healing art of Ayurveda offers holistic approaches to regulate the hormonal system in a natural way.

The Ayurvedic view of hormones

In Ayurveda, the body is controlled by the three doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These bioenergies influence all physical and mental processes, including the hormonal system. An imbalance in the doshas can lead to hormonal disorders. Ayurveda aims to restore the balance of these energies to promote a healthy endocrine system.

Natural ways to regulate hormones with Ayurveda

1. Nutrition for hormonal balance

The right diet plays a crucial role in Ayurvedic hormone regulation. Depending on the dosha type, Ayurveda recommends different foods:

  • Vata dosha: Warming, nourishing foods such as cooked vegetables, ghee and oats promote stability.
  • Pitta dosha: Cooling and bitter foods such as green leafy vegetables, coconut and coriander help to reduce excess heat.
  • Kapha dosha: Light, dry and spicy foods such as ginger, pulses and turmeric support the metabolism.

2. Adaptogens and Ayurvedic herbs

Ayurvedic medicinal herbs support the hormone system in a natural way:

  • Ashwagandha: Helps to reduce stress and regulates cortisol production.
  • Shatavari: Especially for women, as it supports oestrogen production.
  • Tulsi (holy basil): Has a balancing effect on thyroid hormones.

3. Routines and rituals for a stable hormonal system

Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of a regular daily routine (Dinacharya). The following habits can help:

  • Getting up early (before 6 am): Supports the natural hormonal cycle.
  • Oil massages (Abhyanga): Promotes relaxation and hormone balance.
  • Meditation and breathing exercises (pranayama): Reduce stress hormones and calm the nervous system.

4. Hormone yoga: exercise for hormonal balance

Hormone yoga is a special yoga practice that specifically aims to activate and harmonize the hormonal system. It combines dynamic postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) and energy control (bandhas) to promote hormonal production and regulation. Hormone yoga is particularly helpful for

  • Menstrual cramps and irregular cycles
  • Menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes or sleep disorders
  • Thyroid problems and hormone-related stress
  • The desire to have children by stimulating hormone production

A regular practice can help to naturally balance hormones and increase general well-being.

Examples of hormone yoga exercises:

  • Viparita Karani (supported shoulder stand variation): Promotes blood flow to the pelvic organs and supports hormonal balance.
  • Bhujangasana (Cobra): Activates the adrenal glands and helps with hormonal exhaustion.
  • Setu Bandhasana (bridge): Strengthens the thyroid gland and promotes the production of happiness hormones.
  • Malasana (deep squat): Supports hormonal balance by opening up the pelvic region and improving circulation.
