The winter season, characterized by cold days, long nights and often stressful holidays, can take a toll on the body and mind. Between work commitments, family celebrations and the search for presents, there is often little time for yourself. This is where Ayurveda comes in – a millennia-old science that teaches us how to find balance and calm, especially in hectic times. In this blog article, we show you how Ayurveda can help you to reduce stress, keep calm with breathing techniques and sleep better with evening rituals.

1 .How Ayurveda helps you to calm down

Ayurveda views stress as an imbalance of the doshas (vata, pitta and kapha). Especially in the winter season, when the Vata dosha predominates, inner peace can easily be disturbed. Vata stands for movement, restlessness and dryness – ideal in moderation, but too much Vata leads to stress, insomnia and nervousness.

Ayurvedic tips for less stress:

Diet: choose warm, nourishing foods such as soups, stews and dishes with ghee. Spices such as cinnamon, ginger and cardamom calm the nervous system.
Abhyanga: A daily self-massage with warm sesame or almond oil helps to harmonize Vata and calm the mind.
Rituals: Start and end your day with quiet moments, e.g. a short meditation or reading an inspiring text.

2. Practical breathing techniques (pranayama) and their benefits in stressful times

Pranayama, yogic breath control, is an effective way to combat stress. Conscious breathing calms the nervous system, improves oxygen supply and clears the mind. In Ayurveda and yoga, the breath is regarded as the link between body and mind – so controlled breathing can work wonders.

Three simple breathing techniques for more calm:

1. Nadi shodhana (alternate breathing):

  • Sit down comfortably.
  • Close your right nostril with your thumb and breathe in deeply through your left nostril.
  • Close the left nostril with your ring finger, open the right one and exhale.
  • Repeat this for 5-10 minutes.

Benefits: Calms the mind, reduces anxiety and balances the doshas.

2.Bhramari (Bee Breathing):

  • Inhale deeply, keep your mouth closed and hum as you exhale.
  • Place your fingers gently on your ears to perceive the humming more intensely.

Benefits: Helps with overexcitement, calms the nervous system and promotes concentration.

3. Ujjayi (victorious breath):

  • Inhale deeply through your nose and as you exhale, create a gentle hissing sound in the back of your throat.
  • Do this slowly and consciously.

Benefits: Promotes deep relaxation and balance.

3. Rituals for better sleep on long winter nights

Sleep is a central pillar of health in Ayurveda. However, stress and an overactive Vata can disrupt sleep. Especially during the long winter nights, it is important to calm the mind before going to bed.

Ayurvedic rituals for restful sleep:

1.Evening self-massage: massage your feet with warm ghee or sesame oil before going to bed. This calms the nerves and promotes deep sleep.
2. Golden milk: A glass of warm milk with a pinch of turmeric, cinnamon and a little honey is a soothing sleep drink. It warms you from the inside and promotes melatonin production.
3. Digital detox: Avoid screens for 1-2 hours before going to bed. Instead, read a book or listen to relaxing music.
4. Aromatherapy: Use calming scents such as lavender, sandalwood or vetiver in a fragrance lamp or on your pillow. These help to calm the mind.
5. Meditation and mantras: A short meditation or repeating a mantra such as “Om Shanti” helps to clear the mind from the worries of the day.
