Overweight and obesity are increasing health problems worldwide, associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and dyslipidemia. This pilot study investigates the feasibility and efficacy of an Ayurvedic and yoga-based lifestyle program for weight loss in overweight adults.
Method
The study was conducted at the University of Arizona, Tucson, USA and included 17 participants who underwent a 3-month Ayurvedic and yoga-based intervention program. The program included:
Ayurvedic consultations: Twice monthly to customize therapy based on constitution (Kapha/Pitta) and imbalances.
Kapha-reducing diet: Focus on light, low-fat, high-fiber foods, avoidance of sweet, salty and fatty foods.
Yoga training: Kapha-reducing yoga sequences three times a week with a focus on activation and fat burning.
Self-monitoring: food diary, exercise log and daily mindfulness exercises.
Results
1. Weight loss:
After 3 months: 3.54 kg (SD 4.76)
After 6 months: 4.63 kg (SD 6.23)
After 9 months: 5.9 kg (SD 8.52)
2. Body composition:
BMI: reduction by 1.3 points on average.
Body fat percentage: Reduction of 3.75 % after 3 months.
Waist-to-hip ratio: significant improvement in 64% of participants.
3. Psychosocial results:
Reduction in stress levels: average reduction of 27% (measured using the Perceived Stress Scale).
Improvement in quality of life: 33% increase in well-being (measured using the WHOQOL-BREF scale).
Self-efficacy: 90% of participants reported increased awareness of dietary habits and stress management techniques.
4. Satisfaction with the program:
90% of participants were satisfied with the intervention and reported feeling that the yoga-based lifestyle modification program was feasible and effective.
The study shows that an Ayurvedic and yoga-based lifestyle program is an effective and feasible intervention for weight loss. The combination of diet, yoga and mindfulness led to significant improvements in weight, body fat percentage and quality of life. Further large-scale studies are needed to confirm the long-term effects and to determine the optimal duration and intensity of the intervention.
