Allergic rhinitis is an immunologic inflammatory reaction of the nasal mucosa to airborne allergens. Although it is not a life-threatening disease, it significantly affects the quality of life of those affected. Symptoms range from nasal congestion, watery nasal discharge and sneezing to itching around the eyes, palate and throat.
Method
In the present case study, an 18-year-old female patient with chronic allergic rhinitis was examined, who despite conventional medical treatment (antihistamines, nasal sprays, steroids) experienced no lasting improvement. The patient was treated for 15 days with Rajanyadi Churna (500 mg, 3 times daily) and Guduchi Kwath (40 ml). This was followed by treatment with Mahatiktak Ghrita (10 ml) for a further 15 days.
Results
After the treatment, there were significant improvements in the symptoms:
Reduction in sneezing attacks from 80-100 times/day to 2-4 times/day
Reduction of eosinophils in the blood from 8.1% to 4.1%
Decrease in absolute eosinophil count from 704 cells/cu mm to 360 cells/cu mm
The patient reported a considerable improvement in her quality of life and a lasting reduction in symptoms after Ayurvedic therapy.
