Cartilage degradation in the knee causes severe pain in knee osteoarthritis due to bone friction in the knee.
This study, carried out as part of a multidisciplinary arthritis project of the Indian government, investigates the efficacy of various Ayurvedic preparations according to strict scientific standards. The aim of the study was to determine the most effective Ayurvedic preparation and its efficacy compared to the other preparations.
Method
245 subjects with defined complaint patterns were randomly divided into seven groups. Five groups received different ayurvedic preparations which all contained Zingiber officinale, Tinospora cordifoli and partly also other plant extracts. At the same time, one group each received placebo preparations and another glucosamine.
Results
This explorative study came to the conclusion that an ayurvedic combination (preparation C) composed of Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Tinospora cordifolia Mier and Emblica officinalis Gaertn was the most effective of the tested preparations. The pain of the patients decreased the greatest with this preparation.
